1.  The human mind is unique among all God's creation.

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness…" (Genesis 1:26)
Who endowed the heart with wisdom or gave understanding to the mind? (Job 38:36)

2.  Human behavior is driven by thoughts, beliefs and imaginings (or meditations).

3.  Imagining is a gift of God to be used as a tool to set our mind on Him.  It is the place in our mind where we create images of ourselves and others.  The Word of God also calls this ability "desire" or "meditation."

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer (Psalm 19:14).
Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.  Then you will be prosperous and successful (Joshua 1:8).
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night (Psalm 1:2).
O Lord, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep this desire in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you (1 Chronicles 29:18).

4.  What God desires for us is very different from what the world is selling.


He has showed you, O man, what is good.  And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8).
There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers (Proverbs 6:16-19).
(Jesus speaking) Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world (John 17:24).

5.  The commands of Scripture are clear regarding our thought life and these commands are for our benefit!


If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded (like Christ)… (Philippians 2:1-2).
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things (Philippians 4:8).
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2).
This is love for God: to obey his commands.  And his commands are not burdensome (1 John 5:3).

6.  Human behavior will never be without sin, but our desire must always be to do what is right in the sight of God.


I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.  For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.  For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing (Romans 7:18-19).

For though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again (Proverbs 24:16).

7.  Reprogramming the mind must be a daily task.

Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.  What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self (Luke 9:23-25).
Therefore, prepare your mind for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.  As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance (1 Peter 1:13-14).

8.  The battle for our thought life is serious business.


Be self-controlled and alert.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of suffering (1 Peter 5:8-9).

(Jesus speaking of the devil) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him.  When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44).

9.  The victory is assured because God answers prayer.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin.  Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:14-16).
